Retrofuture Devlog #1 | Introduction

Hello! Welcome to my devlog for a new game I'm working on! This first page is primarily going to be explaining what the game is about, sharing things that inspire it, and how this devlog is going to look.

What I Want The Game To Be

To start, I want to share the general concept. This game is going to be a procedurally-generated immersive sim set in a sci-fi world, I'm calling the specific genre "Retrofuture", as there is no other good word for it.

Immersive Sim

To explain what this means, immersive sims are adventure or simulation games which emphasize player choice, meaning that there is often not a forced narrative or path to take. Patrick Gill from Polygon has a great video explaining them and their history. I want to be able to create a game with a system that works intuitvely and allows for crazy ideas to work, like games such as Dwarf Fortress and Space Station 13/14. I find these games fascinating, but often really difficult to play, which is why I plan to make my game pretty easy, there will be plenty of customizations for those who want a challenge however.

Style

I am referring to the style of my game as "Retrofuture", or more specifically "Atompunk", which is how people of the past envisioned the world of tommorrow. I want to go more for a The Jetsons feeling, rather than something more dieselpunk or steampunk. It will also be very cartoony, my primary inspiration was Rhythm Heaven Fever, specifically Remix 7 I plan to use cel-shading and low-poly models to keep it cartoony while also hopefully helping performance.
